The recent weeks of late nights and socialising has taken a small toll on the dollars so last weekend I spent some time eating good food with the other volunteers. We were all invited to Cecelia’s for some traditional grub. Cecelia is pretty much the volunteer’s own fairy godmother. She is the landlady to some of the volunteers and looks after us all as if we were part of the family. She helps with our washing when the hand washing gets too much and we need a treat. She also teaches us how to cook the perfect roti (still working on that one but she did try!) and in general giving us the important tips, which keep us happy and safe whilst living and working in Guyana. She cooked several dishes, all of which were delicious; Mete gee, which was a coconut dish with sweet potato and other root vegetable, fried balanjay (eggplant) and other tasty greens, and of course the perfectly made roti! A few banks beer top it all of to make the perfect meal.

It was a nice night as it brought all of the Georgetown Volunteers together. The volunteers are from all over the UK, some live in Canada now and one or two are from the Netherlands. Stephen is from Darwen, (behind with white hair), where my dad is from, and Mera (on the left with the green shirt) lives down the road from Hannah and Alan (my brother and his wife) in Hedge End, Southampton – apparently down the other side of the hill from them if you are going to Tesco? Anyway! Stephen and Mary (standing right behind me) live near Croydon and Mary knows my neck of the woods pretty well, they also previously worked in schools in Peckham….it just goes to show how small the world is doesn’t it?!
